A Dog Around Town...
the word from JoBuddy
Is it time to "look up" from our smartphones and see the beautiful world around us?

Everyone is using social media these days.  Yes, it has its wondrous benefits, but it also has its price.  I am not against facebook or twitter or instagram.  I am just for real life interactions.  Far better is it to speak to someone face to face than on facetime.  Far better is it to sit in someone's living room than to resign yourself in a chat room.  Maybe you could pick up a tennis ball and play catch with your best buddy. wink wink

There is a wonderful video poem by Gary Turk that is circulating facebook and youtube (a little ironic).  It is called "Look Up" and it is an attempt to bring people back from the zombie state of texting and into the real world of real human contact and interactions.

You can find a link to the video here.  It's worth the 5 minutes it will take to watch it.

Thanks for playing along.  Bark at ya next month.

A Lesson from our Founding Fathers
I just finished watching the miniseries John Adams, based off the book written by David Mccullough.  It's a remarkable account of a remarkable man that sacrificed so much in the name of his cause and country.

Our nation was not born silently nor peacefully.  Violence and sorrow is an inevitable part of war. Despite the tragic losses during the American Revolution, a great dream was realized.  It was the carefully crafted work of brilliant minds.  Men like John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin managed to weave together the strands of thirteen distinct colonies and unite them into a single country.

One part of the history I didn't hear about in grade school was the on again off again relationship between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.  Adams, a straightforward, conservative from humble means in Massachusetts and Jefferson, the poet philosopher from Virginia formed an unlikely friendship in their common fight against England.  For years, they were the closest of allies, but they became bitter rivals as their views on how to govern drifted apart.

The lesson to learn from these two great men is how they came together and resolved their differences.  After years of agonizing separation, the two men mended their friendship and struck up a correspondence that continued for the duration of their lives.  Forgetting the slanderous insults and leaving behind the injurious attacks of politics, they moved on and forgave one another.

Mr. Adams and Mr. Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of our nation's birth.  They were able to depart this life as friends.  It is said that the last words of John Adams were, "Jefferson still survives."  But he was mistaken.  Jefferson had died five hours earlier.

So much of their lives was spent uniting a country, it is only fitting that they were able to unite in their personal lives as well.  Their example is ever before us.

Happy 4th of July!!

A Living Work of Art

Your child will only be this age once in her lifetime.  She will never be the same as she is today.  As she grows, she will most definitely learn new things, develop new smiles, create new ideas... but some things will be lost.  She will soon outgrow the chubby cheeks and cuddles.  Yes, one day, she might even be too big to crawl up in your lap (Say it isn't so!).  The way she mispronounced her "R's" will be a distant memory.

Our children grow up.  That's a fact of life.  But that doesn't mean we can't look back with fond memories over all that she once was and has now become.

Our children are living works of art.  We are moved by their beauty and captivated by their glances.  They teach us, inspire us, frustrate us, and motivate us.  We pour our hearts and souls into their development in the hopes that they will one day do the same for their children.

They are living works of art.  Every inch of them, from their curly hair to their curled up toes.  One look can instantly change your mood.  One look is all it takes.

I say this as a father...  Take time to capture their beauty as they grow.  Take the time today so that you can remember it tomorrow and all the tomorrows to come.  Surround yourself in your home with these living works of art.  They will enrich your life just as any good work of art will.

Making family memories at the "Happiest place on Earth"

...The memories my family made that week will forever be etched in my mind.  Too many memories to recount in a single sitting.  But just a close of my eyes, and I'm instantly transported back there riding Splash Mountain with my girls, hearing my oldest giggle about how she is always the one that gets soaked at the end of the ride; or I'm outside Gaston's Tavern laughing at his hilarious mixture of comedic arrogance and charm; or I'm hearing my 2 year old's sweet voice exclaim, "Mickey Mouse!" as she sees him for the very first time.
Stretching Your Life
3 Tips Encourage a Life with Purpose

My Friday started with a visit to a physical therapist as I have been having pain in my right shoulder. Max, my PT described how a slight injury can result in so much pain and tightening of everything that is needed to make the shoulder work as it should. The process of getting it back into shape involves routine heating, stretching and cooling. If you have ever gone through this process, you know the stretching process can be quite uncomfortable and downright painful.

That got me to thinking about some of my recent conversations with our 13 year-old son on stepping out of our comfort zone. Talk about stress. How would you like to be 13 again? Not me!

Is there a better way to start your day?
A family portrait session that was so much more
Image
The morning of her session, we gathered onto the porch of the Hardeman House, just around the corner from our studio, eager to see what musical moments we could create.  What followed was such an emotionally and spiritually stirring event.  George and Amy kicked it off, softly playing the guitar and mandolin and adding in some vocal harmony.  Their son delicately joined in on the ukulele.  Soon the street was echoing with their rising voices.  They were singing to God.  The sound was tender, yet powerful.  It was heartwarming to notice each of the little smiles, nods and quick glances they gave one another.  To hear this sweet family that morning was incredibly uplifting and wonderful to experience.  To see them relate to each other the way they did was quite moving.
The Joys of Owning Your Business

One of my absolute favorite aspects of our portrait garden and surrounding property is our GINORMOUS pecan tree.  Years ago, an arborist (a tree expert) visited and said that it was one of the largest and oldest pecan trees he had ever seen.  Pecan trees are familiar to everyone in the Nacogdoches area, but this one is special.  Every year it produces bucket loads of wonderful pecans, and it consistently provides a beautiful backdrop for outdoor photos.

The rub is that pecan trees are "self-pruning," meaning they drop branches like crazy.  When the winds came through yesterday, it was just too much for one of the ol' girl's bigger branches.  So Greg and his father in law Harry have been dutifully chopping and hauling pecan branches all morning.
