(Note: If you missed my previous two articles on the process of becoming Certified, I encourage you to go back a few months or visit our Facebook page for the first and second part of this story)

Does it happen to you the same as with me. When you have something really important to do you are the busiest? This past month has been busy at the studio and home and wouldn't you know it, that is when the images were due for certification.

I know that most of you are similar in that you are critical of yourself especially when it comes to something you have a passion about. I'm the same way with my photography. Always working toward improvement. Looking back over the 16 years we have been in full-time business, I've got to say there has been remarkable improvement. But the time has come to submit images for peer review as part of becoming a certified professional photographer. And man was I critical of my work.

The first six images I submitted must fit within compulsory guidelines showing a standardized technical proficiency that all professional photographers, regardless of specialty, should know. The remaining nine images must be representative of my client work from job assignments in the last 24 months.

I'm thankful that we keep digital archives of all portrait sessions. We do this because we are professionals. You never know when a client will need additional portraits printed. As in the many cases when families have lost their homes due to fire. Being able to replace their treasured memories is one way we can help. In the case of CPP image submissions, it was a great help to have them easily available.

Some of the details of the compulsory images included short lighting, broad lighting, selective focus, assertive line, S-curve and rule of thirds. One of my favorites was a recent portrait of a beautiful 1 year-old having a tea party in the portrait garden. Beautifully lit with strong emphasis on Rule of Thirds. Just precious!

The additional nine images were some of my favorites over the past two years. Mixed between in studio and outside, the images "spoke" to me in some way. In some cases it was the family bond that could almost be felt through the portrait, others the excitement of being a young adult graduating high school, looking for your place in this world.

After first narrowing down my favorites to about 50, I ended up with a very strong 15 images.

Time will tell but hopefully the judges will see the 25 years of professional experience in the images submitted.
