Pro Tips

(Note: If you missed my last article on the process of become Certified, I encourage you to step back a month or visit our Facebook page for the first part of this story)

Over the past few months I have been preparing for the CPP or Certified Professional Photographer's exam. An exam that is similar to, let's say, becoming a CPA, mortgage broker or some other professional service provider. Each of these areas requires the passing of the exam that culminates your knowledge of the field and your ability to provide professional services and ethical practices.

As a *professional educator, I write and give tests. The table was turned in this case, and I became the student once again. That's really OK as I love to learn and as a lecturer am ever learning to be the best possible professor for my students. So my journey began again but this time taking a passage or route I've already traveled.

The exam itself was broken down into seven sections totaling 100 questions. There were questions to be expected that covered the basic camera operations such as aperture and shutter speed, appropriate lens use and selection. One section, and one of my favorites, was the section on composition and design where things like tertiary, achromatic, facets of color, s-curve posing were questioned.

Digital Post Production section replaced the previous and dated section on darkroom processes and procedures. I do, however, miss the darkroom days of watching exposed photographic paper magically appear in Kodak Dektol.

The last section, which was weighted at 25%, was that of Lighting. This section too was one of my favorites as it covered things like the theory of light, color correction, angle of incidence, influences of color, lighting ratios, light modifiers, Rembrandt and split lighting. Lighting is such an important tool in my bag of knowledge as a Professional and I spend much time making this aspect of the portraits we capture the absolute best possible.

Houston was the destination of the exam, and I was thankful to have my wife Cindy as my driver which allowed me to review a few more hours. We also enjoyed the company of Creative Photography's Kellie Gann. (About six months back, both Clay Bostian and myself decided to walk through this process together. It's been a pleasure to work with Clay and Kellie as professionals with the same passion.)

The timed test allowed for two hours of knowledge to be poured out into the answers of strategically phrased questions. It took most of that time for me to work through the test, but at the end I felt there were only five questions where I was unsure.

FAST FORWARD....Unlike most modern tests that can be run through a Scantron for immediate results, we were painfully required to wait a few weeks for the result. The result was that of either PASS or FAIL.

I'm excited to say I received the notice that I am one step further along the process as I did PASS!

Have YOU stretched yourself, changed professions or done something similar? As always, I'm interested in your thoughts and comments.
