East Texas winters.... I'll never get used to them.  The freezing cold weather immediately followed by pockets of warm, muggy weather can reek havoc on your sinuses, I know.

But it's not all bad.  In fact, I like the wintery cold with "warm spring days" sprinkled in.  One day you could imagine yourself in the Rockies and the very next day you could quite literally be out fishing in short-sleeves.  It's all in how you look at it.

One way or another, I try to see the positive in any given situation.  For instance, you might be thinking that this is not an ideal time of year for family portraits.  Take a second glance.  You might be pleasantly surprised.  The outdoor lighting this time of year is exquisite. And try wearing layers.  Families dressed in layers is very "IN" right now.  Plus, the variety of texture and dimension displays amazingly in professional portraiture.  Besides,
when else in East Texas will you feel comfortable in long-sleeves, sweaters, scarves, vests and hats?  And try having your family portraits done downtown on the brick streets or against some of the old, texture-rich buildings.  You don't have to have greenery or colorful flowers to have a beautiful portrait.

So, if you are looking for something amazing and something original.; If you are willing to try out some of these ideas, I could direct you to some folks that are experts on the matter.

Thanks for reading.  Talk to you next month.

We recently vacationed in Arkansas and were around some beautiful landscapes and scenery. Down on the Buffalo river, I took some photos but kept finding that a single photo just didn't give the grandeur of the scene. A panorama of the scene is what was needed.

To accomplish this, you must first take several images, typically from left to right or right to left, overlapping each frame by about 25%. In capturing the sequence, its best if your cameras exposure doesn't change. This would be a great chance to try out that M mode!

Once you have a sequence, maybe 5-7 images, you can try something like http://hugin.sourceforge.net/download/ to stitch them together.

It's always fun to see what you come up with!

The Wrights
There's no better time than right now

When your profession is photographing people, you will meet a great number of characters, each having their own unique story.  When our clients visit our studio, we can't help but get to know them a little better.  We ask about their families and their jobs... what exciting plans they might have coming up... the usual.
The Wright Couple
Well, Dan and Rene were no exception.  And it didn't take long to find out what exciting plans they had coming up.  In fact, when Rene first called our studio, she asked how quickly we could get the finished portraits back to her.  So I told her that we work diligently to accommodate every client's specific needs, and then I asked her when she needed them.  She responded that she was moving to Beijing in a month and needed them before then.

That's right.  Moving from little ole' Nac-a-nowhere to Beijing, China!  This was one I hadn't heard before.  It turns out that they have been all over the world, including Afghanastan and Iraq.  They have incredible stories to tell with an amazing perspective.  With a couple like that, it's easy to get caught up asking questions about the places they have been and what certain people were like.  Pretty soon you lose track of time and forget that they are there to have portraits made.

Well, needless to say, we were able to gather our thoughts and capture some pretty incredible portraits despite our desire to live vicariously through their adventurous lives.  This was an important moment, and we were thrilled to play a small role.  This was something important to the both of them, but specifically something Dan had been wanting to do for years.  And there was no better time than the present to make that wish a reality.

What a fun and exciting couple they are!  We wish Dan and Rene safe travel and good times in their new home.  We hope that they are able to see the sights and landscape of China... and send us pictures!  And it would be great if, after their two-year plan to be on the other side of the world, they were able to come back to East Texas.  I know Nacogdoches would be happy to see them again, and so would we.
